AHEMDABAD

AHEMDABAD

For many years, Ahmedabad, the capital city of Gujarat, was the centre of Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent struggle for Indian independence

SABARMATI ASHRAM

For many years, Ahmedabad, the capital city of Gujarat, was the centre of Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent struggle for Indian independence. The energy of that movement can still be felt in the satyagraha Ashram or Harijan Ashram that Gandhiji established on the banks of the Sabarmati in 1917.  Sabarmati Ashram or Gandhi Ashram is located four miles from the townhall.
An Ashram is a Hindu religious retreat. This Ashram was one of the residences of ‘Father Of The Nation’, ‘Mohandas Karam Chand Gandhi’, generally called Mahatma Gandhi, who lived there for about twelve years, with his wife Kasturba.  This Ashram was witness to many historical events that shook  up the British Empire. It was from jis base in this Ashram that Gandhiji led the Dandi March, also called Salt Satyagraha on March12,1930. In recognition of the deep influence that this March had on the Indian independence movement, the Inddian Government has established the Ashram as a national monument.
This Ashram houses the five units namely the office, library, two photo galleries and an auditorium. It has the largest number of manuscripts of Gandhiji’s letters an articles.
In a tribute to Gandhiji, Pandit jawahar Lal Nehru had said “Wherever he trod became hallowed land, Wherever he sat became temples.” This statement of Nehruji is true indeed for the non-violent Ganddhiji. It is a famous saying that “ De dim hame azadi, bina khadag bina dhaal;   sabarmati ke Sant , tune kar diya kamala,” It means that this great soul gave us freedom without using any weapons or any violence. Its really our good fortune that we can get a sense of his life, the history of the movement and those who worked alongside him, at the Gandi Smarak sangrahalaya. It is a museum and an institution whose aim is to preserve and propagate the legacy of Mahatma, the Great Soul. Sabarmati ashram is  a source of inspiration for the present generation, and will serve as such for the generations to come. Gandhiji’s ideas will really serve as a beacon light for all the coming generations.
This  museum contains excellentpictorial and written documentation, a and an immense archive of letters written by him on the back of used papers. The grounds include the Hryakunj (Gandhiji’s sparse living quarters), Vinoba –Mira kutir( where Vinoba Bhave and Mira each stayed on separate visits), Upasana Mandir(prarthana bhoomi), a guest house and a building used as a training center for cottage industries, all are preserved as part of the museum. These grounds are open from sunrise to sunset on all days of the year, but the best time is early morning as the sun rises over the river and people and in a meditative spirit. This Ashram receives about 7lakh visitors a year whose needs have to be catered for. Its opening time is from 8.00am to 7.00pm. The original charkha(the spinning wheel) used by him to make khadi clothsand its various copies are preserved here, his writing table he used for writing letters and also a few priceless items are kept there and cared for. His real spectacles are kept intact there. The room where he used to have meetings with the freedom fighters an their seats etc. are so preserved as if they all would just come and sit and start a meeting here.

With prior appointment from the Secretary, Gandhi Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust,, the Gandhi Smarak sangrahalaya, Gandhi Ashram  Ahmedabad 380027, a walking tour can be organized. This 90min. guide tour starts with  a slide show and ends at the library.

The famous Geeta Bhawan is also here whose religious books are sold all over India. There are numerous things to see and explore in Rishikesh like the beautiful temples, the holy Ganges and its clear water (before entering the plains and being polluted), enjoying rafting etc.

TRAYAMBAKESHWAR TEMPLE IN RISHIKESH

The famous Trayambakeshwar Temple was founded by Guru Shankaracharya in the 12thcentury. This temple is located in the heart of the city, at the foothills of the Himalayas in Rishikesh. It is situated on the eastern bank of the Ganges near the famous bridge, Lakshaman Jhula.Trayambakeshwar Temple, popularly known as “Tera Manjila Mandir”(13 storey temple), is a unique landmark in Rishikesh because of its gigantic size, with numerous idols of various gods and goddesses from Hindu Mythology adorning it. This temple is highly revered amongst local pilgrims because it is believed that all the prayers offered in this temple are fulfilled.

The Sanskrit term “Trayambakeshwar” translated into English implies the abode of the three eyed one or Lord Shiva, who is the presiding deity installed here in form of a magnificent Lingam. This temple is set up against the backdrop of the majesticHimalayas .This is one of the most venerated religious destinations in Rishikesh. Its size is grand while the surroundings (Himalayas, Ganges, and Market) are gorgeous. It is a wonderful piece of architect that just stuns the visitor and only say “Wow!”
This temple is thronged by many devotees during Shiv Ratri which is celebrated here with much enthusiasm and vigour. This temple is open to all on all days and at all times. Because of its grand size and beautiful architecture, it looks more like a hotel than a temple. But still, no one can stop himself or herself from self-surrender in front of the lord of the lords Shiva and that too in this majestic temple where all the wishes of the devotee are fulfilled by saying “OM NAMAH SHIVAY”.

LAKSHMAN JHULA RISHIKESH

Lakshman Jhula, as the name suggests, is a hanging walkway bridge. It is made of iron, in the eastern part of the town of Rishikesh, (in Uttarakhand, India), where most of the religious ashrams of the city are located. Rishikesh is a city in Dehradun district. It is located in the foothills of the Himalayas in the northern part of India. It is also called the Gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas, as it is surrounded by three other districts namely, Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal and the famous pilgrimage city Haridwar. Hrishikesh (Rishikesh) is a name of lord Vishnu that means lord of the senses. The root words Hrishik (means senses) and Ish (God) join together to make Rishikesh. Lakshman Jhula is a major attraction among the tourists to Rishikesh. It is 450ft. long.
According to Hindu mythology, Lakshman (younger brother of lord Ram) crossed river Ganges on jute ropes between the places where this bridge has been built. It was constructed in 1939.
Tourists love crossing the bridge on foot so that they can feel the sway of it and also enjoy the spectacular view of Rishikesh-Himalayan hills, Ganges and the religious temples. This bridge is a wonder by construction because it sways over the fast gushing Ganga underneath it and it has no pillars in between. This gives the feeling of swing.

This is also a holy bridge because it was built by Lakshman, who was a part of lord Vishnu’s avatar Ram. It’s very exciting to go in the middle of the jhula and feel the vibrations in it, which gives a thrilling experience. Moving on the bridge provides a very panoramic view of the holy river Ganga and the ghats across both the sides of the hills. One can enjoy the picturesque surroundings and the cool breeze from the river while standing on the bridge. A number of fish are seen in the river from this spot. Food for the fish is sold there at many places. If we feel like feeding the fish (as many people do), we can take and enjoy the ride of the boat and cross the river while dropping the balls (food of fish) in the river. The boat ride makes the bridge appear more gorgeous and marvelous
.

This bridge is meant only for pedestrians, but one can see two-wheelers, pushcarts, cows, dogs and quite a few monkeys as well on it. And amazingly, it is still intact. Even the animals enjoy the bouncy feeling which remains even after getting off the bridge. Close to Lakshman Jhula, another bridge has been built between Shivanand Ashram and Swarg Ashram. This is named Ram Jhula or Shivanand Jhula.

Haridwar

Haridwar, in Uttaranchal, is one of the four main pilgrimage destinations in India. Haridwar has got numerous temples and pilgrimage centres, which make it one of the most sacred places in India.

Places to visit in Haridwar:

HAR KI PAURI

Har Ki Pauri is the most famous ghat on the banks of the holy river Ganga in Haridwar in Uttarakhand in India. This is so because this is the place where most of the Indian saints and rishis are headed, in search of peace and nirvana. River Ganga is considered as the most sacred river in the world  and is personified as a Goddess in Hindu mythology. Ganga is worshipped by Hindus as they believe that bathing in this river and particularly in Har Ki Pauri causes remission of sins and facititates from the cycle of life and death.Devotees travel long distances to immerse the ashes of their beloved ones in this ghat in order to bring their spirits closer to moksha.

The river Ganga actually originates from the jata(hair) of lord Shiva. This revered place is a major landmark in the holy city of Haridwar. Literally, ‘hari’ means ‘lord Shiva’. So har Ki Pauri means The steps to reach to lord Shiva. Lord Vishnu is said to have visited the Brahmakunda, in this ghat along with lord Shiva in the vedic times. There is a large footprint, which is said to belong to lord Vishnu on a stone wall.

The River ganges, after flowing for 253km.(157mi.) from its source at Gaumukh at the edge of the Gangotri glacier, enters the Indo-Gangetic Plains of North India for the first time at Hardwar, which gives the city its ancestral name, Gangadwara. Therefore,  Har Ki Pauri is the spot where this river falls from the laps of the mountains to the plains In order to meet the needs of the people and wash their sins(according to Hindu mythology). It is the place where millions of devotees, pilgrims as well as tourists flock to celebrate the prominent festivities like Kumbh Mela(occurs every twelve years), Ardhkumbh Mela(occurs every six years), somavati amavasya, Punjabi harvest festival baisakhi, every eclipse of the year etc. A  large number of devotees converge here with their kavar(bamboo stick with a basket at each end) like that used by Shravan Kumar in mythological story. They come in the month of Sawan(August in hindi calendar is called sawan) to carry gangajal from Har ki Pauri to their destinations of Shiva temple and offer this gangajal to lord Shiva on the great festival of Shivratri. This they do in order to get boon or after getting what they wanted in order to express their love and devotion  towards God and purify their soul. They come from all over India and move to far off places on foot happily along with dancing on the prayers and rhymes of praises to lord Shiva and keep on saying ‘bam bam bhole’ the whole way. This spectacle is mind blowing towards the way to God.

This ghat is so old that it is said to have been built in the first century B.C.by king Vikramaditya, in memory of his brother Bharthari who had come here in order to meditate.

It is the same place where the evening Ganga Arti takes place which is considered very sacred. This spot is also called ‘Brahmakund’ where drops of Amrit(the elixir of immortality) fell accidentally from over the sky, while being carried in a pitcher by the celestial bird, Garuda after the samudramanthan. Consequently, everyday this ghat witnesses thousands of people taking a drip in water of Ganga. This place is considered very auspicious. Over the years, this ghat has undergone major extensions and renovations as the crowds increase every year in Kumbh Melas. Many temples have been built on its steps.

There is a Godess Ganga’s statue in the middle of the river Ganga at this ghat, which looks so fabulous. The city of Haridwar is surrounded by the Himalayas and then the whole scenery of Shiva In Ganga amidst the mountains becomes so awesome that the visitor wants to visit this place again and again and wants to spend his idle or time of tension in Haridwar in order to be calm and in a state of mental peace.  Each evening at sunset, priests perform Ganga Arti on this ghat, when lights are set on the water to drift downstream. This is the most amazing and soul-touching-spectacle, not to be seen anywhere else. A large number of people gather at both the banks of  this ghat to sing the arti of its praises. The priests hold large bowls of fire in their hands, the gongs in the temples start ringing and the praising chants flow out of their lips that fill the whole atmosphere of that place. People float earthern diyas put in the bowls made with leaves filled with beautiful flowers. This golden hues of floral diyas reflected in the holy Ganga outpour the most enchanting sight. This spiritual aura, revolving round the Ganga, gives the spontaneous feeling of invoking lord Shiva and goddess Ganga to come out and wash away our  soul of all the sins we have committed and lead our way to heaven. Even alcohol and non-vegetarian food is not allowed at this place. This purity is the faith and reason with which every devotee goes to Haridwar and this visit proves that Uttarakhand is the abode of Gods.

This beautiful temple has many adorned ornamental idols. The glasswork designed on the temple and on the idols is mind blowing, one can’t escape from being still and speechless and one can only say wow… Its exquisite mirror work is a fun for kids. The parallelly placed mirrors provide infinite pictures of the idol, certain lences  in the temple provide thinner, while others provide shorter pictures of  the visitors. Even the elders enjoy them. This temple has been named after king Daksha Prajapati, the father of Sati or Dakshayani- lord Shiva’s wife.It was built by Queen Dhankaur in 1810A.D. and rebuilt in 1962 and is a place of pilgrimage for devotees of lord Shiva or Bholebhandari. Mythologies relate this temple to Daksha yajna, which was so important that it has been mentioned in all our Vedas and Puranas. It has the very same yajnashala has been confirmed.

According to the mythology, King Daksha performed the Yajna(ritual in order to invoke Gods and seek their favour). It is said that the aim of this yajna was not prayers, but to insult lord Shiva. Therefore king Daksha invited all the kings and deities of the world except lord Shiva, who was his son- in-law as well. King’s daughter Sati thought that her father had forgot to invite them, so she came herself and requested her father to invite her husband then. But, Daksha refused to do so. Sati found her husband being spurned by her father and so she  jumped into the fire of yagna-kunda.Lord Shiva was burnt with anger.

There is a pit within the grounds of the temple, which marks the exact location of the sacrificial fire. Therefore, the temple stands as a tribute to the sacrifice of Sati Mata.

This temple has the holy Shiva idol, situated at its centre. This temple is visited by thousands of devotees in the month of August or Sawan, the of Shiva in Hindu calendar.
